Around the islands

What you came for

Malta is 27 kilometres end to end, which means everything on this list is a day trip and most of it is an afternoon. Ask us and we'll book the boat.

The turquoise shallows and rocky islets of the Blue Lagoon on Comino

Boats leave from the bay

Comino & the Blue Lagoon

The single best reason to be based up here. Trip boats leave from Buġibba and Qawra through the season, so you walk to the quay rather than driving across the island. Go on the first boat — the lagoon is close to empty until mid-morning.

Boats from the bay, a short walk away

The red sand of Ramla Bay below Gozo's terraced hillsides

The slower island

Gozo

Ċirkewwa, where the Gozo ferry goes from, is about twenty minutes up the coast — closer from here than from anywhere else people stay. Salt pans at Xwejni, the Ġgantija temples, and a long lunch somewhere with a view.

A narrow Valletta street lined with traditional timber balconies

Worth the trip in

Valletta

Europe's smallest capital, a UNESCO site you can cross on foot in twenty minutes. Caravaggio in St John's Co-Cathedral, the Upper Barrakka gardens for the noon gun, and the bars down Strait Street that only wake up late. Direct buses run from Buġibba square.

Sunbeds on the sand at Golden Bay, below the old watchtower

The sand ones

Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa

Malta's proper sandy beaches are on this side of the island, twenty minutes west. Golden Bay has the easy access and the beach bar; walk over the headland to Għajn Tuffieħa and there are two hundred steps and far fewer people.

An empty limestone alley inside the walls of Mdina

The Silent City

Mdina & Rabat

The old walled capital, still residential, still closed to cars after dark. Go for sunset once the coaches have left, when the limestone turns the colour of honey and you have the bastion walls to yourself.

A diver suspended in clear blue water off the Maltese coast

Year-round, 16–26°C

Diving off the north coast

Some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean, and a lot of it reachable straight from the shore. There are dive schools within walking distance of the apartment, and the wrecks off this coast are among the best in Malta.
